UPS Switches to Battery Even With Utility Power Present

Symptoms

UPS unexpectedly transfers to battery backup mode even though utility/mains power is clearly present and appears stable.

Root Cause

Utility voltage or frequency drifting outside the UPS's acceptance window, a failing input filter/rectifier stage, or overly sensitive transfer thresholds in the UPS configuration.

Follow the UPS manufacturer's procedure for safe internal inspection — UPS units contain high-voltage battery strings and capacitors that remain energized after input power is removed.

Testing Procedure

1) Log utility voltage and frequency over time with a power quality meter to catch brief sags/swells the UPS is reacting to that a multimeter would miss.\n2) Check the UPS's configured input voltage/frequency window against actual utility characteristics at the site.\n3) Inspect the UPS input rectifier/filter stage for component wear.
