Generator Fails to Reach Rated Voltage
Generator starts and runs at correct speed/frequency, but output voltage stays well below the rated nameplate value.
Loss of residual magnetism in the AVR/exciter circuit, faulty AVR, worn brushes (brushed alternators), or a blown AVR fuse.
Follow lock-out/tag-out before touching any exciter or AVR wiring. Be aware residual voltage can still be present briefly after shutdown.
1) Check generator frequency first — confirm engine speed is correct before troubleshooting voltage.\n2) Measure AVR output and check its fuse.\n3) Inspect brushes and slip rings for wear (brushed types).\n4) Try a brief "flash the field" procedure if residual magnetism is suspected (per manufacturer instructions).

1. Confirm engine speed/frequency is correct — a voltage problem at correct frequency points to the excitation system, not the engine.\n2. Check and replace a blown AVR fuse if found.\n3. Inspect and clean/replace worn brushes and slip rings.\n4. If residual magnetism was lost (e.g. after a dead short), flash the field per the manufacturer's procedure.
Run generators under load periodically (not just no-load tests) to catch AVR issues before an actual outage.
Correct frequency with low voltage is a strong indicator the problem is in excitation, not the prime mover — check the AVR before anything mechanical.
