Distribution Panel Breaker Nuisance Tripping
A branch circuit breaker in a distribution panel trips intermittently with no obvious overload — sometimes under light load, sometimes with nothing connected.
Loose connection generating heat at the breaker terminal, a breaker nearing end of life (mechanical fatigue), or a downstream intermittent ground fault (if it's a GFCI/RCD-type breaker).
De-energize and verify zero energy state before touching any terminal. Re-torquing energized terminals is not acceptable practice.
1) Torque-check the breaker's line and load terminal connections to spec.\n2) Thermal-image the panel under load to spot hot connections.\n3) If it's a GFCI/RCD breaker, temporarily test with a known-good standard breaker (where code permits) to isolate breaker vs. wiring.\n4) Check for shared neutrals or miswiring on multi-wire branch circuits.
Torque screwdriver, infrared camera, multimeter, insulation tester
1. Re-torque any loose terminal found — a loose connection both overheats and can cause erratic tripping that looks electrical but is mechanical.\n2. Replace the breaker if thermal imaging shows a hot spot even after re-torquing, or if it's simply old and heavily cycled.\n3. If tripping continues and it's a GFCI/RCD type, trace the branch circuit for insulation faults or shared neutrals.
Include panel terminal torque-checks and thermal imaging in the annual electrical maintenance program.
Nuisance tripping with no clear overload is one of the most common "it must be electrical" complaints that's actually a loose mechanical connection — thermal imaging finds this faster than anything else.
